I think Hernan has an interesting perspective.
I also feel that the story could have more than one or ambiguous heroes. Rand
definitely prefers some characters over others, but I think it is up to the
reader to decide who the protagonist is. For most of the book, I too thought
that either Dagny or Hank were the primary protagonists. However now that Rand
has revealed John Galt, I see that he is going to play a crucial role in the
chapters ahead. I have also thought of Franciso as one of the main
protagonists. He seems to be everywhere and omniscient throughout this story.
I agree that
these characters are definitely protagonists, but not necessarily heroes. Rand
made the point at Rearden’s trial that Rearden does more for the public good
than do any of the looters. However, as Atlantis was introduced, it occurred to
me that none of these retirees are doing anything to help those outside of
their community. I don’t see anything wrong with this as the looters forced
them into it, but I don’t think the book should imply that they are all helping
the public good by working for themselves.
