Wesley, while I was reading the beginning of your reaction,
all I could think was “he’s crazy, he’s crazy, he’s crazy,” until I read that
it was all a joke. I agree with you completely. I am definitely ready to get to
the last word of this book. I also agree with what you say about Rand’s ability
to steer the reader when she wants him or her to go. She wants us to love Dagny
and Rearden and to hate the Science Institute. What do you mean by Dagny’s
constant “flip-flopping?” I think that she has stayed with the same mindset
pretty solidly throughout the whole book. I think that what you are trying to
say is that the story that Rand has created is over the top. I think that she
made it over the top on purpose to get people to really think what could happen
to our economy and our whole world. I think that she amply describes the
non-economic effects of economic failures. I too have changed the way I think
about the American economy and the capitalist market. Did you read Pride and
Prejudice last year? I think that this book is similar in the sense that both authors
show extreme conclusions to action that can realistically occur.
