Zane Van de Put's Reaction #5

In this section of Atlas Shrugged I found the Dagny Hank and Lillian situation to be very interesting. As Dagny and Hank continue to have their affair, Hank and Lillian spread farther apart. Their “marriage” has turned even worse than before. Hank does not even enjoy the sight of Lillian anymore. Lillian notices this and plans to “keep” Hank by taking away his money. She thinks that his job and his money are the things that are ruining their marriage. This move by Lillian has made me despise her. The only thing Lillian cares about is her social status. She uses Hank to increase and show off her rank in society. Even though Hank is cheating on her and the one at fault, the novel makes the readers dislike Lillian.
At James wedding, Dagny, Hank, and Lillian are all finally in the same place. Dagny and Lillian get into an argument about the Rearden metal bracelet. Previously at Hank’s anniversary party, in the same argument Hank took Lillian’s side. However, at James’ wedding Hank takes Dagny’s side. This shows Hank’s transition from Lillian to Dagny. This quick instance makes me believe that Hank loves Dagny. Even though Hank tells Dagny that she is just a sex toy to him at Wyatt’s house; Hank has become in love with Dagny. I think this is true because every moment in his day he thinks about Dagny. He even tells Dagny that he was “lying to himself at Ellis Wyatt’s house that morning”(pg. 397). Dagny responds to Hank by saying “I know”. This shows that Dagny is also in love with Hank. Hopefully soon I will get to find out what happens to this relationship.
