So
far this was the most eventful part of Atlas
Shrugged. Against insurmountable odds, the John Galt Line was finished and
the bridge of Rearden Metal was a success. For once, the odds seem to be in
favor of the capitalists: Hank, Dagny, and Ellis Wyatt. This did not come as a
shock to me, as this is only the beginning of this story, which still shocks
me. What interests me is what is still left to come.
Having
completed the first run on the John Galt Line, everything seems to be okay for
now. However, how will it play out in the future? The Equalization of
Opportunity Bill forced Hank to sell part of his business to Paul Larkin. This
seemed like a good choice, but Larkin was present with Mouch, Jim and Orren
when they planned to take down Rearden enterprises. Is this all part of their
plan? Even Wyatt is unsure of the future, admitting to Dagny and Hank during
the celebration that he has no idea how long they will last. No matter how hard
they work, or how good their products are, there always seems to be an even
greater upcoming obstacle.
Another
question is the future of the characters. Fransico made several appearances in
the first chapter, but was scarcely there during “The John Galt Line”. I feel
like he has yet to play his major role. I think he knows much more than the
other characters. Perhaps he has a master plan of his own. The mention of his
classmate, who has now become a pirate seems very important. I’m curious to
know how that will play out in the future. In addition, I’m curious to see how
will Hank and Dagny’s relationship continue after their night together. Could
it be the only successful one in
the story, or bring ruin to both of them?
