During this part of the reading although I enjoy Dagny’s
persistence of trying to find the creator of the abandoned engine, she needs to
focus more on other issues at hand. This engine is consuming her life and
her business and I feel that the more she focuses on it the less her company
will flourish. I don’t understand why she cant just accept the fact that he may
be dead. In the case that she does find the engineer why would he help her and
explain to her how to manufacture such an amazing contraption. At this point
she should just give up and continue to focus on the John Galt line. But, as we
have learned more about Dagny she most certainly will not give up until she
finds the engineer.
As the story
continued I began to see how Rearden was being eaten away by his guilt of
cheating on Lillian. He is miserable at the moment but don’t feel any sorrow
for him since he was the one to put him into this situation. If he wanted to
avoid this he would have had to merely refrain from cheating on her, but now he
will have to embrace the consequences that will hopefully come soon. All of the
characters in this story only care about themselves and this is what leads them
to hurting the feelings of others. It is in the nature of humanity to be
selfish rather than selfless. This behavior can be both good and bad. In this
case Dagny and Rearden’s selfish nature is what might cause the downfall to
their success.
