Atlas Shrugged Reaction (pg. 169-219): Libby Evans

Just when everything is going relatively smoothly a catastrophe happens. It starts off with some irritating man from the Science Institute trying to advice Rearden on the future of Rearden metal. First he lectures about some nonsense about how his product will damage society. He demands that Rearden suspend the sale of his product as solution to this problem which is both irrelevant and nonexistent. The real problem is that Rearden will put people out of business by revolutionizing the market with his new metal. Then, the man threatens him by stating that the Institute will not support his decision after Rearden rejects the man's offer to buy all the rights to Rearden Metal. The Institute then blacklists the Taggart Transcontinental by stating that Rearden Metal is unsafe. Because of this, no one will work on the railroad or allow production of Rearden Metal.

Dagny brilliantly decides to spare the company by creating a new line separate from Taggart Transcontinental. With this, stock of the company will go up, and Dagny can go and finish the line without any problem. Because of a need for money, Francisco comes back into the picture. He does not agree to lend Dagny money because of some mysterious reason. This frustrating reason keeps pushing away Dagny as a way to spare her somehow. Dagny is able to secure money from other people such as Rearden to complete the line. Then, a legislation comes out banning one company from controlling multiple markets. Such affects Rearden and brings to light the despicable people in business.

The most dramatic point of the chapter along with the business catastrophe is the emotional development. It is clear that Francisco still cares for Dagny, but is hiding something. Rearden admits to himself that he has feelings for Dagny that go beyond business matters. Then, Dagny finds herself feeling lonely and wanting to be with someone. However, Dagny herself does not know who this person is.
