What interests me most in these chapters is the relationship
between Lilian and Hank Rearden. Hank Rearden has fallen in love with Dagny yet
has kept it a secret behind his wife. Hank never really felt any love towards Lilian,
which makes me wonder why he ever married her in the first place. Hank seems to
be a person who does things strictly out of motivation, like running his
company and creating his metal. So why marry someone he does not love?
What puzzles me even more is the way Lilian reacts once she
realizes her husband is having an affair. I feel terrible for Lilian, that she
has had to go through the many years lonely, not even sleeping in the same
bedroom as her husband. If many other people were in her position they would
probably file for divorce, but she refuses to do this. The question I have is
why? Is it to torture Hank for doing what she believed is wrong? Does Lilian
still hope that one day she can make him love her?
Love is something that is felt, not learned. I do not
believe that Lilian can make Hank love her. And this will only cause a huge
downfall for herself when she is unable to succeed. Why does Lilian have so
much hope in something others would see as impossible and give up upon?
