While
reading Atlas shrugged, I noticed how Ayn Rand began to call everything that
was government related or controlled “People’s.” For example, the “People’s
Mortgage Company” in Wisconsin. She also calls all of the countries she
mentions “People’s States.” Rand talks about the People’s State of Portugal and
even the People’s State of England. Another common theme of hers is how she
continues to develop the socialist character of the nation by formulating
various laws and regulations which force equality in business ventures well
past the threshold where it becomes harmful to the national economy and even
the businesses themselves. All of these phrase choices by Rand along with the
laws she puts in place for the country are put forth in a light that portrays
the socialist way as evil and counterproductive.
As a
story without the larger context, Atlas Shrugged depicts the hardship of Dagny
as she tries to do business and succeed in the world that is changing to make
that so difficult for her. She is entirely dedicated to supporting her business
and finding the loopholes in these terrible laws to make sure that she is able
to succeed. She and Rearden have to fight so many battles in order to keep their businesses alive.
