Alexa Ferrer Chapters 1-2

Atlas Shrugged deals with relatable situations and real people in society. What the four characters introduced so far share in common is the fact that they are hard workers. Something else they share in common is the fact that they have failed to yet find happiness in life.  Eddie Willers seems to suffer from anxiety, which may be caused by the fact that he has been stuck in the same social class as his father and cannot manage to find a way out or move up. He worries so much about the fate of Taggard Transcontinental Railroad because it is the only stable aspect of his life and he needs something permanent to hold on to and life for, due to a childhood tragedy. I am a little confused with James Taggard because two sides of him have been exposed through his conversation with Eddie and his conversation with his sister. At first I hated the way he spoke down to Eddie but the way he stood up for the company values against his sister was admirable. Dagny Taggard’s assumed authority on all aspects of her job without any compassion bothers me. I do admire her will to get done what she believes needs to get done by giving business to Rearden Steel but it doesn't hurt to respect the people you talk to. She is very similar to Hank Rearden with their only priority being to make money and their seemingly incapability to feel anything at all. I do feel sorry for Hank and how his family treats him after he works so hard, but I find it difficult to understand his lack of emotion towards anything separate from his job. I hope to learn more about each character and possibly change my views on them; this is simply my first impression of each person. I am still wondering who or what is John Galt.
